WOULD YOU RATHER

Reading is such a personal activity; there are no two readers in the world that are the same. While some people may have similar tastes, there is not one mould for a ‘Booklover’ and that’s what I love most about my fellow bookmaggots. On account of my ‘being all new to the Book blogger community’, I thought perhaps I should take the opportunity for y’all to get to know me a bit.

So here we have ‘Would you rather’. The Bookish Edition…

All of these questions were taken from JesseTheReader's Youtube channel which I love, so if you haven’t checked him out yet; do so https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDPo9-NZFNi2Gwe8LnlvAUQ

1.) Read only trilogies or stand-alones

Yee-owza, straight in there with a tough one. My absolute favourite book of all time is a standalone (Uprooted by Naomi Novik FYI). But ordinarily I am a big fan of trilogies. I find a trilogy gives you more time to fall in love with the characters, their development and discover more about the world the author has created. So I'm going to saaaaaay...trilogies.

2.) Read only female or male authors

I couldn't give two craps about the gender of the author of the book I'm reading. It doesn’t really matter to me at all, I will pick up a book based on whether the story and/or writing style appeals to me. However, looking at my favourite books, it just so happens that, most of them are written by females. So I'm basing my answer off the fact that never being able to re-read Harry Potter is unthinkable - Female Authors.

3.) Hardback or Paperback?

Hummmm. Each certainly has their merits and I own a lot of both. On one hand a paperback is easier to read; it’s more pliable and hurts less when you drop it on your face while attempting to read in bed. It's also easier to fit into a handbag and they are a lot cheaper than hardbacks. But oh those hardbacks are just so damn pretty… and they look so attractive on my bookshelf…

I’m going to go for...paa-HARDBACKS…

4.) All books become movies or TV shows

We all know the saying - "The book is better than the film". And this is true in 99.9% of cases (The only exception being Howl's Moving Castle <3). So really I would rather some books stay as books. But for this one I have to say TV shows. With a film, they have such a limited time that it is impossible to fit everything in. Case in point - Harry Potter #JUSTICEFORPEEVES. I also enjoy seeing actors I’ve never heard of before being cast, which I feel happens more often in TV shows than films. So my answer is, TV Shows.

5.) Read five pages per day or five books per week

Yo, I am a slow-ass reader. I narrate everything in my head in a very James Earl Jonesy fashion. So to read five books a week would leave me no time to work, eat, sleep or really do anything. But only being able to read five pages a day would be torture. I'm a very impatient person, and five pages a day would likely lead me to getting bored of a book very easily and never finishing it. I’m going to base my answer off the assumption that there would be some crazy superpower bestowed upon me to read hecka fast and get through some serious reading. Five books per week.

6.) Be a Professional reviewer or author

I am having a grand old time writing all these reviews and bookish articles. But I definitely think I would love to be a published author. It is every bookworms dream right? It is something I will most likely attempt in the future. You heard it here first. But I believe that everything has a time and there's no point rushing something that isn't ready to happen just yet.

7.) Only read your top 20 books over and over or only read new books you've never read before

Oh hot diggity dang. I’m not a huge person for re-reading books, but its nice to think they are always there if I wanted to. And never being able to re-read Harry Potter is a tough thought to swallow. But I think... oh gosh… I think I’ll have to go with only ever reading new books. Because I know in my heart there are a great many books out there that are just waiting to become extremely special to me. I gotta go find those babies.

8.) Be a Librarian or a Bookseller

I have some insight on this one because I already am a Bookseller. I think I would still prefer it to being a Librarian. As a bookseller I get to see all these exciting new releases coming through our doors, as well as a sweet staff discount. A Library is a very hushed place, but a bookshop is an environment where you can chat about your favourite books freely. It has its down points but I'd still say Bookseller.

9.) Only read your favourite genre, or every genre except your favourite genre

Although I dabble in lots of genres, if someone put a gun to my head and said CHOOSE I would say Fantasy is my favourite genre. And it is a genre that is truly limitless. I find it hard to believe you could ever get bored of it and it's where my bookish heart always wanders back to. My answer is, only your favourite genre.

10.) Only read physical books or ebooks

This is an easy one for me. While I absolutely understand the appeal of ebooks to a lot of readers - I have never and will never use them. As I said above, I read a lot of fantasy, which means maps, character lists and fantastical elements. This girl needs to be able to flip back and forth sometimes to confirm things or see where the characters are journeying to/from. I can't do that easily with an ebook. So for me, it will always be ink and pages.

I hope you all have enjoyed getting to know me a little better as a reader. I would love to see all your responses to the questions - so don't be afraid to leave comments down below. And don't forget to follow my brand new Bookish Twitter @bridiebookabyss

Happy Reading!

  1. These questions are pretty hard! I love reading real books and I never read an e-book either.
